What will I need to enjoy fishing at Elk Springs
This section of the Elk River, beginning at the resort and continuing downstream to Whitaker Falls, is
Catch and Release Only (C&R), with the section flowing through the resort property is Fly Fishing
Only. All WVDNR regulations for C&R must be followed at all times. You can access those regulations at https://wvdnr.gov/fishing/fishing-regulations.
While you must use a fly rod and fly-fishing tackle only in the section flowing through the resort, you can use a spinning rod and other tackle in the downstream section of the river between the resort and Whitaker Falls.
Your tackle must still be compliant with C&R regulations, so please consult the DNR guidelines
to ensure compliance. Given the temperature of the water, a good pair of waders are a good idea. In the event you do not possess the required equipment, it can be rented at the fly shop at the resort. Rental equipment is limited and will be an additional $30 per day to rent from the resort.
All anglers are required to purchase a valid WV Fishing License if you are fishing during this event. Licenses can be purchased at https://wvdnr.gov/fishing. In accordance with WVDNR regulations, all anglers are required to possess a Conservation Stamp and Trout Stamp in conjunction with their license. The resort DOES NOT sell fishing licenses. They must be purchased prior to your arrival.
Any, or all participants will be able to catch a fish in the pay pond (if they choose to do so) on Wednesday, May 20, that can be prepared on the fire for dinner that evening. Please let us know if you plan to take advantage of this opportunity when you register to help us in our menu planning. There is an additional fee of $8 per pound charged by the resort for catching fish in the pay pond.
Elk Springs Resort has a fully-stocked fly shop that has almost everything you will need (or forget to bring) to enjoy this event. Should you want to explore other flies, or tackle during your stay, you can pay them a visit at your convenience. The resort also offers professional fishing guides if you would like more individual attention. The cost for this service is $375 for the day and arrangement must be made directly with the resort.
